I graduated a week ago, and one way I am existing outside of my head is by volunteering. Instead of spending my days ruthlessly applying to job after job/working part-time jobs I am fortunate to still have, these service hours give me back my time. It’s due in part to my friend and colleague, Jeanine.
She is who she says she is. No-nonsense, yet with a heart of gold. Assertive and bold, honest and fair Jeanine’s the kind of person (and professional) I want to be.
We met because of my church. We’ve both attended, even becoming members, other faith spaces before. Furthermore, we both understand that time is the biggest gift, that committing a life to service isn’t always pretty, but it sure is beautiful and enriching.
Jeanine was one of the first folks who absolutely believed in me, from the very start of meeting. And though we’ve done a lot of thought-work together over the last year, we get to do a lot of hands-on work together, too. Thanks to making time.
Jeanine, if you ever read this, know: You are so much more than the work you do, and know that this affirmation can co-exist with respecting hard work. You remind me to stay committed to my values, remain fiercely independent yet still capable of collaboration, and always stay grateful and grounded. I thank God for you!
