July’s been full of creativity. By making space in the in-betweens, adding an extra few minutes at the store of the day by meditating, and meeting up with fellow creatives, I’m exploring new things.
And that, my dear friends, includes songwriting.
Let me be clear: While my partner, best friend, brother, mom, and many more important people in my life sing (well), I seldom belt. Unless I’m in the shower. Or the car.
Songwriting, though? I’ve learned it’s something I can do.
Perhaps it’s the structure. Or that my partner has started the day with Write Better Lyrics for the last few months. But in those sweet, often quiet moments, songs have come.
Some are filled with cliche (some are practically bursting with them, on purpose). My partner C and I bounced cliche after cliche, threading them together into a song.
While some of these songs are assignments, right from the book, I’m working on one that’s just for me.
And what’s more? It’s fun. Maybe because this work is both creating a new connection between my partner and me, it’s that I am making a new discovery for myself.
As my best friend says, anyone can sing. With this newfound songwriting, I’m really starting to believe anyone can write, too.
I am finally making creativity a must-do. Such a creative habit is not in the art, it is the making of it. And so, I am making.
I can’t wait to keep making new (songs, discoveries, and art) all August, too.
